September is the New January

During the summertime, looking for a job becomes a challenging endeavor. At our recruiting division, The Compliance Search Group, we’ve received about fifty new job orders from clients. So, the job part of the equation is good. It is having people in the office which is the tough part.

The summer, in particular August, is prime vacation time. If you are interviewing, you face the frustrating situation where the Human Resources professional is on vacation. When he or she returns to move the process forward, the hiring manager is away. When he or she returns, the other participant in the interview schedule is gone.

Additionally, psychology plays a factor in the slowdown in the momentum of hiring. Now, with the nice weather, your boss and colleagues are on vacation so work does not seem so bad. You think of a long weekend in the Hamptons or Jersey Shore rather than a new job. The nice weather tends to put people in a better mood, and their bad job situation does not seem that dire for now.

Now that we are into September, it starts to slowly change. Most all of the vacations are over, kids are going back to school, and the fall weather will soon be upon us. The mood shifts. Even as adults, we feel the same “back to school” mindset as when we were young students. The same way kids sadly contemplate once again loading homework, taking tests, and working on reports, adults begin to think of their job and careers. It is a time to become serious once again.

Additionally, there is a window of opportunity to find a new job. There has been a put-up demand for certain jobs, and now the hiring managers are more focused.

Also, savvy hiring managers recognize that they need to move quickly. Once we hit late November, early December, the interview process slows down again due to the holidays and another round of vacation time. Closer to the end of the year, a candidate will ask for larger increases to their bonus salary to make up for the loss of salary increases that would be awarded if he or she remained at the firm.

So, while we are sad to see the summer end, we are glad that business of recruiting and hiring starts to pick up and gain momentum.
